The section of the Internal Revenue Code that sets limits on benefits, contribution amounts, and the amount of pay that can be considered in calculating contributions to qualified retirement plans. These caps are adjusted annually for cost-of-living increases. The limitation of annual contributions to qualified plans is the primary reason why companies set up nonqualified plans, which let participants defer more compensation than they otherwise could.
